THINGS WE ARE DOING RIGHT

 

*Coronado baseball players are consistently in the top 15-20% of their class.

*Multiple Coronado baseball players take multiple hours of Pre-AP, AP, and Dual Credit courses

*In 2009 Coronado baseball was undefeated against Lubbock teams in our district (4-0)

*Since 2003 we have sent 20 players to continue to play college baseball, 7 of whom have been pitchers.  Two pitchers have been drafted…Miles Morgan, in the 17th Round by the Cleveland Indians and Thomas Keeling, in the 20th Round, by the New York Yankees.  Both stayed in school to continue their education.

*In my last 16 years of coaching, I have coached 36 players who have played in college.  11 of those have gone to Division 1 schools.  12 of the 36 have been pitchers.  4 have been drafted or have played professional baseball.  3 of the 4 have been pitchers.

*In 2003 Kurt Pessa was selected to the All-State Team, was the 2-5A Player of the Year, and the AJ Player of the Year.  He was in Sports Illustrated.  He went on to pitch for Rice University, who made it to the College World Series.  Pessa was selected as the player at the CWS with the highest GPA to give a speech in front of 30,000 at the CWS to stress the importance of an education

*Justin Duchescherer is a CHS graduate and he currently plays for the Oakland A’s and he was recently selected to the Major League All-Star game

*Mike Smith played football at Tech and went on to have a successful NFL career with the Baltimore Ravens.  He, Ryan Aycock, and Kevin Curtis all played baseball together at CHS and all played football together at Texas Tech

*Last year 3 former CHS players won an NAIA National Championship at LCU.  Marc Gomez, Tanner Vickers, and Vince Bejar were members of the 2009 National Championship LCU Baseball team

*In 2006 CHS Baseball had 5 players make the TSWA All-State Team

*CHS has had 146 All-District players since 1967

*Last spring Tanner Vickers won the Daktronics-NAIA Scholar Athlete award at LCU for his efforts in the classroom.  He was the first athlete at LCU to win the award since another CHS baseball player, Ryan Owen, won it in 2007

*Marc Gomez was a 2006 All-Star, who got to play in the THSBCA All-Star game in The Ballpark in Arlington

*In 2003 Assistant Coach, David Arterburn, was selected as the THSBCA Assistant Coach of the Year

*Since 2003 CHS Baseball has raised over $25,000 for charities and scholarships, such as the Stacy Gomez Scholarship Fund, the American Cancer Society, in the name of Mackenzie JHS teacher and coach, Larry English, and the Make-A-Wish Foundation

*In the last decade no team in District 2-5A has won more district championships than a team coached by Jimmy Webster

*Coach Webster has twice been nominated for the Southwestern Bell Award, which recognizes teachers/coaches who make a difference in student’s lives

*Coach Webster has been named the District 2-5A Coach of the Year 5 times, the AJ Coach of the Year once, and the AJ South Plains Coach of the Year once

*In the summer of 2007 Coronado had two players, Hunter Scott and Mason Randolph, play for Team Texas in the Sophomore Sunbelt Series

* In the summer of 2009 Coronado had three players, Hunter Scott, Mason Randolph, and Alex Linker, play for Team Texas in the Junior Sunbelt Series

*Last summer Mason Randolph and Hunter Scott were selected by the Texas Scout’s Association to play in the Texas Scout’s Association Games in The Ballpark in Arlington

*Last spring Mason Randolph won the State Farm High School Athlete of the Week Award

*Last year Alex Linker was named the AJ’s 4A-5A Player of the Year

*Last year Alex Linker and Shaney Wilkinson were selected to the TWSA All-State Baseball Team

*Shaney Wilkinson went to Princeton to pay football.

*Kaleb Martin won a $120,000 Marine scholarship to attend the University of Oklahoma

*Mason Randolph and Hunter Scott have both given verbal commitments to play baseball at Texas Tech next season

*Jamodrick McGruder signed at Tech last year and is currently in the running to start at 2B for the Red Raider Baseball Team

*Last season Garrett Reed threw the 17th no-hitter in Coronado history

*Since 2003 O’Banion Field has received new stadium lights, new netting surrounding the stands, a new freeway net, and a new indoor hitting facility, a new locker room

*In the past 40 years Coronado Baseball has won at least 20 games 13 times and we have done it twice in the past 4 years
